It’s been a while… five years, in fact.
We’d love to say we’ve been carefully crafting our next blog post all this time, waiting for the perfect moment—but the truth is, we got a little distracted. And by “a little distracted,” we mean completely absorbed in filling our shop windows with flowers, plants, and the occasional slightly over-ambitious idea that somehow (mostly) worked.
If you’ve ever walked past The Flower Plant and found yourself doing a double take at the window, you’ll know exactly what we mean. Our displays have always been a bit of a playground for us—a place to experiment, celebrate the seasons, and sometimes just to see how many stems of spruce we can reasonably fit into one space before it becomes a health and safety situation (the answer is a lot, incase you're wondering!).
Over the years, those windows have taken on a life of their own. From bold statements that caught the attention of Miley Cyrus (literally, she's basically now a close personal friend...), rainbows that cheered up our village during lockdown, to festive displays that may or may not have involved us being covered head to toe in spruce and sugar pine, each one has told its own story. And somehow, those stories travelled further than we expected—leading to conversations, new customers, and even the occasional radio interview (which we’re still not entirely sure we felt prepared for, but thoroughly enjoyed nonetheless).
Looking back through some of our favourite displays, it’s clear they’ve become a big part of who we are. They’re not just windows—they’re our way of saying hello, showing off a little, and hopefully making someone’s day brighter as they pass by.
So, consider this our official return to the world of blogging. A little overdue? Absolutely. But we’ve got plenty to catch up on.
If we’re going to start anywhere, I think we should begin with the one that really put our name out there and got lots of attention — the rainbow during Covid.
If you’ve followed us for a long time and remember the lockdown days, I had this idea to paint a giant rainbow across our entire shopfront to symbolise hope. Covid and lockdown took a huge toll on people’s mental health and finances… businesses closed their doors forever, and people lost loved ones. Times were incredibly hard.
I was scared, but one thing I kept repeating to myself was the lyric from Spice Girls: “Look for the rainbow in every storm.” And so, the rainbow idea was born.
2020 was actually a rather fabulous year for our shopfronts. We had ‘You’re Tidy’ and...
‘Baby It’s Gold Outside’, where we painted the entire shopfront gold!
2021 started off strong with ‘How You Doin’ — a classic flirty line from Friends, but with a deeper meaning. Off the back of Covid and lockdown, we really wanted to inspire people to check in with each other and ask, “How are you actually doing?” This one even landed us a chat on Radio Leicester.
‘Mum’s n Roses’ — gorgeous, classic, a playful nod to Guns N’ Roses. We loved having a giant rose across the window. 10/10, no notes.
If you’ve never seen Only Fools and Horses, you might think we just love yellow vans… but if you have, you’ll get the reference. And as much as I’d love to say we trade in New York and Paris, we are, in fact, based in Sileby, Leicestershire… it doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, but a girl can dream!
2022 came around and the creativity didn’t stop — we started to become known for our shop windows. “What are you doing next?” was something I was asked a lot… often while I was still working on the newest idea! People always wanted moreeeee.
Valentine’s 2022 was a hit… lips, feather boas, and a quote from the one and only RuPaul that still stands true to this day: “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” True, RuPaul. True.
Mother’s Day — Mum’s the Wordle… if you get it, you get it. What happened to that game? Why did we all stop playing it?
Then came the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, and it felt important to mark the occasion — so Queenie got a window.
For Christmas 2022, I wanted it to feel like you were stepping into another world when you entered the shop. Sometimes I feel like that even when it’s not Christmas… but I do adore my shop! Inspired by The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, we created a Narnia-style door — and just like that, the magic was born.
Now this is where I peaked in my floral life, in my opinion…
Not only did this look incredible, but it garnered so much attention that it was reshared on social media by Miley Cyrus herself! We landed even more radio airtime and gained a huge number of new followers from this alone. I smile every time I see it.
Christmas 2023… my poor father-in-law is always the one drafted in to help paint the shop. When I told him we needed to change it from black to all white — Snow White, in fact — I think I saw a tear shed. Nevertheless, he cracked on and absolutely pulled this out of the bag!
I am KENough… enough said.
Sticking with the theme of iconic cinematography, we had to include a little nod to Gavin & Stacey and that iconic Christmas episode.
Last Christmas, I created what can only be described as all of my festive fantasies and wishes merged into one. We had a literal Christmas grotto, Santa came to visit during a late-night shopping event, and if you could’ve smelt the sugar pine… WOW.
It took a lot to take this one down — emotionally and physically.
That brings us up to speed with this year.
2026 — TRAITOR!
This one caused a bit of controversy. Some people got it and loved it — they’d watched The Traitors and picked up on the nod to Claudia Winkleman with the pink lips. Others were a little more offended and thought I was calling them a traitor… maybe I was.
Either way, it definitely sparked some conversation, which we always love.
My shop windows are just one of the ways I use creativity as an outlet and let my imagination run wild. It’s always fun to see an idea come to life in so many different forms.
So next time you’re passing by, keep your eyes peeled for the next window… you never know what you might see.
